Refigurações
1998-1999
The Refigurações series emerged as a metaphor. Were reappropriations of some abstract compositions of Loio-Pérsio for the figurative context of the landscape. Part of Loio’s extraordinary painting was the result of a slow and judicious process studying forms of leaves until they reach the synthetic abstraction of works of his maturity. I started Refigurations in the year of my move to the interior of northern Paraná. There in the region, just at that time (1997), the first major conflicts of occupation of the MST arose, in the regions of western São Paulo, in Pontal do Paranapanema and Santa Margarida. I went to the region of the occupations to know the land and its landscape, which were in dispute, and the struggle for their expropriation to shelter the crops of the dispossessed. And then the idea of “reappropriating” Loio’s compositions to the natural context from which they came out came up: that’s why the term “refigurations”.
Refigurações

As séries das Refigurações surgiu como uma metáfora. Foram reapropriações de algumas composições abstratas de Loio-Pérsio para o contexto figurativo da paisagem. Parte da extraordinária pintura de Loio foi o resultado de um lento e criterioso processo de sintetização de formas de elementos vegetais, para a as formas sintéticas de sua abstração dos trabalhos da maturidade. Eu iniciei as Refigurações no ano de minha mudança para o interior do norte do Paraná. Lá na região, justamente nessa época (1997), surgiram os primeiros grandes conflitos de ocupação do MST, nas regiões do oeste paulista, no Pontal do Paranapanema e Santa Margarida. Fui até a região das ocupações para conhecer a terra e a sua paisagem, que estavam em disputa, e a luta por sua desapropriação para abrigar as lavouras dos despossuídos. E então surgiu a ideia de “reapropriar” composições de Loio para o contexto natural de onde elas saíram: por isso o termo “refigurações”.
